history of the peace & freedom party
The Peace and Freedom Party was founded in 1967, by young people who where dissatisfied with the countries main political parties. The Democratic Party was leading the nation in an unpopular and genocidal war against Vietnam. As the military drained the economy, both Republicans and Democrats called for "law and order" to repress Americans who were standing up to improve their own living conditions.
Black America was organizing for their rights in urban cities, while Filipino and Latino farmworkers were organizing labor unions in the fields. Women were organizing for full equality with men. These forces of discontent felt they where not represented by either of the two major political parties so they united to create their own. Today the Peace and Freedom Party remains the only working class, progressive, and socialist political party on the ballot in the state of California.
